An increase in the Ca content of a diet intensifies the severity of hypervitaminosis and gives rise to calcareous deposits for a given level of vitamin D excess. On diets low in Ca and phosphate and with high excess of vitamin D, resorp-tion of bone substance occurs. Large doses of vitamin D stimulate osteogenesis on normal diets, and in contrast to the findings in vitamin D deficiency, blood Ca, or phosphate, or both, are usually high. Vitamin D increases the absorption of Ca and phosphate from the gut.
