The use of muscle relaxants in this country is influenced to some extent by the Liverpool school of anesthesia. It will thus be interesting to thosewho follow this influence to read a very different approach in the first chapter of this book. Although there will be many who do not wholly agree with the editor's views, both in the use of relaxants and the general management of anesthesia, the reader cannot fail to benefit from much sound advice on technique and dosage in this chapter.The two chapters on altered sensitivity and complications associated with muscle relaxants are complementary and present the reader with a clear outline of the subject and a valuable basis for further study. There is a welcome emphasis on the problems of muscle pains following the use of succinylcholine chloride. Considerable space is given to the problems of the use of relaxants in both the elderly and the very young, with a clear and concise explanation of the relationship between age and relaxant effect. Dr Francis Foldes has been in the forefront of discussion concerning the use and misuse of muscle relaxants for many years and so is well chosen for the editorship of this excellent contribution to the clinical aneesthesia series.
