A physiological measure of processing load or" mental effort" required to perform a cognitive task should accurately reflect within-task, between-task, and between-individual variations in processing demands. The present article reviews all available experimental data on task-evoked pupillary response. It is concluded that the task-evoked pupillary response fulfills the criteria. Alternative explanations are considered and rejected.
