In municipal landfill currently in operation, surface runoff was negligible up until now because basically no surface runoff occurs on untreated municipal waste. However, when waste is treated before it is deposited, the physical characteristics such as infiltration rate or saturated hydraulic conductivity are so greatly altered that runoff of precipitation can occur. In order to determine quality and quantity of surface runoff of mechanically biologically treated waste a new laboratory experimental device was developed at the Leichtweiss Institute (LWI). This presentation will introduce the device and a few physical fundamentals of surface runoff. The first test results will also be presented here. Furthermore, first results from in-situ testing on large-scale test fields and an evaluation for Mediterranean and North African Countries will be presented.
