Abstract Start-up demonstration tests for products with start-up delay are introduced, which are fit for the studying on start-up reliability of the products with start-up delay. The probability mass function, the distribution function, the mean of the test length, the acceptance and rejection probabilities of two start-up demonstration tests with start-up delay are derived by using the finite Markov chain imbedding approach. Besides, a procedure for selecting the optimal parameter values of the new models is given. Finally, numerical results show that the new models are more efficient.
