standards for physical education defines a physically educated person as one who exhibits a physically active lifestyle (National Association for Sport and Physical Education [NASPE], 1995). This standard indicates that students must be physically active outside of school. Yet the achievement of this standard is difficult for physical educators to assess because student lifestyles are out of their direct control. Ultimately, teachers require the assistance of parents in this endeavor, since parents' beliefs and values concerning physical education greatly influence their children's physical activity outside of school (Mitchell, Barton, & Stanne, 2000). Physical educators at West Central Elementary School (a pseudonym), in west central Illinois, teach children to be physically active outside of school and communicate to parents what highquality physical education includes by assigning relevant homework to their students. This article includes a discussion of how physical activity homework can be used to meet the national standards and how West Central Elementary School uses such homework.
