The negative potential wave in the cortex evoked by sensory stimulation of the contralateral rat forepaw was enhanced by surface-positive polarization of 5-50 [mu]amp and that if the duration of passage of current was 5 minutes or more, this enhancement continued after the polarizing current was switched off. In many cases this effect lasted for 3 hours or longer. Similarly, surface-negative currents gave rise to a long-lasting diminution in the size of the evoked potential. In addition to the change in the size of the evoked potential there was an increase in the level of general activity of the cortical neurons during the passage of surface-positive current; this effect also persisted after the polarization was discontinued, in some experiments for longer than 4 hours.
