Sticklebacks parasitized by S. solidus larvae recover more quickly from a frightening overhead stimulus than non-parasitized individuals. Parasitized fish often feed subsequent to the stimulus, non-parasitized fish do not. Recovery time from the stimulus is significantly negatively correlated with parasitic load, indicating a progressive curtailment of the fright reaction. Modification of the anti-predator behavior of the intermediate host may depend on the metabolic demands of the parasite and potentially may be of adaptive value for the parasite.
