Looking back, I am conscious of much generalizing, but am fortified by the thought that others are more cap· able of specific solutions. I have been possessed by the conviction that general practice has a great role in the problem of the aged, and that the handling of this role, along with its performance in the whole field of social medicine, could be decisive for its future. The invitation will not stand forever. Victor Hugo said: "There is no power like the power of an idea whose time has arrived." One might add, there is no failure as final as missing the call of history.
