P-Cresol and 4-nitrophenol were hydroxylated in reaction mixtures containing dihydroxyfumaric acid, FeSO4and O2. The accumulation of hydroxylated product exhibited an initial lag whereas the oxidation of dihydroxyfumaric acid did not. This lag was eliminated by H2O2. Hydroxylation was partially inhibited by Superoxide dismutase, catalase, or formate and was completely inhibited by ethanol. The results suggest that the active hydroxylating species was OH· and that O2−, although not functioning directly as a hydroxylating agent, did serve to generate OH· by a reaction which involved H2O2.
