METHODThe experimenters devised four pairs of drawings intended to be non-representational. A nonsense-name which seemed to the experimenters to “fit” the figure was invented for each figure. These figures and names will be found in Figure 1. In addition we used the pair of figures illustrated by Kohler (5, p. 243) and the names there given, with a change in one of, the names (baluma to maluma, to avoid the association of “balloon”). In pronouncing the names all vowels were given a short sound except those indicated by the spelling as long, and accented u which was given the sound of 00 as in moon. We shall refer to each pair of figures and the corresponding pair of names as a rrSet’’of material. The method we used for developing this material differed from that of Fox; it seems to us to be a defect in his otherwise excellent piece of work that he constructed his figures and names almost entirely “in a purely haphazard manner”(3, p. 555). If cne wishes to study the perception of similarities it seems well to use material which presents such similarities; and this is unlikely to occur purely
