wars. Two works by Paul Fussell invoke the aid of literature to explore conflict in the twentieth century. They have been widely read. They deserve to be explored and evaluated. The Great War and Modern Memory appeared in 1975. It deals with the First World War (although the Second World War keeps elbowing in), and draws heavily on creative writers like Siegfried Sassoon and Edmund Blunden. It was followed in 1989 by Wartime. This is a book about the Second World War, and contains many references to Cyril Connolly and Osbert Sitwell.~
