Biosensor design and technology is a developing area in the quest for inno-vative approaches to analysis. Although the routine use of biosensors has yet to be fully accepted, this situation no doubt will change as it becomes increasingly apparent that they have the potential to revolutionize analyti-cal methodology by providing a power-ful and often considerably less expensive alternative to older, well-established laboratory techniques. Sensors offer the possibility of realtime analysis, which is particularly im-portant for the rapid measurement of body analytes. In fact, the largest po-tential markets for biosensors current-ly are the clinical and health care fields. However, there is also intense pressure to exploit novel sensors in industry—for example, in process monitoring and control where there is a demand for in situ determination of flow rates, levels of contaminants, and so on.
