Knowledge of the foraging behavior of marine predators is critical for understanding their role in the ecosystem and their impacts on other species (Boyd et al. 2006). However, studies on the foraging behavior of marine predators are often logistically difficult, since direct observations are rarely possible. With the development of miniaturized electronic recording devices, such as time–depth recorders (TDRs), different activities and behaviors have been used to infer foraging behavior (Le Boeuf et al. 1988, Boyd and Croxall 1992). Use of TDRs is now widespread; however, using just dive records derived from pressure changes means it is often difficult to determine whether animals are actively foraging or are engaged in other activities, such as traveling or resting (Hindell et al. 2010).
