Reviewed the literature to determine whether a new diagnostic entity, age-associated memory impairment (AAMI), is warranted for inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV). Issues considered included (1) determining who complains of AAMI,(2) factors contributing to the process of complaint,(3) whether subjective complaints are related to objective deficits, and (4) whether age-related decrements are stable. Also examined was whether the AAMI construct describes a clinical syndrome that has pathological, therapeutic, or prognostic significance. It is recommended that the term" age-associated cognitive decline" be implemented instead of AAMI.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
