Discusses the role of dynamic expectancies and their determinants on melody recognition. Two ideas about expectancy are developed with a particular model. One assumes that an expectancy is a time-based attentional trajectory and that mental set reflects the operation of groups of dynamic expectancies (ie, an expectancy scheme) that follow rules defined by prototypical musical patterns. The second idea assumes that expectancies and expectancy schemes allow listeners to predict useful forthcoming notes that serve as cognitive attentional anchors, termed perceptual reference frames. Perceptual reference frames allow listeners to cope with unexpected events. The model's applicability to recent data in melody recognition is discussed.(13 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
