A comparison is made between the principal methods now used for estimating size of home range from live-trapping "records of small mammals. The intensity of use of various portions of the area is biologically significant, as well as absolute size. The commonly-used methods for estimating size of home range involve an assumption that animals seldom range beyond the areas where trapped. A method is suggested for computing the location of a "center of activity." The probability of capture seems to decrease with increased distance from the center of activity. The trap-revealed home range usually increases most rapidly with the first few captures, and relatively little thereafter. This has been explained as an animal reaching the absolute limits of its home range, but it may be a result of the mechanics of trapping. The relationship between true home range and trap-revealed home range requires exptl. analysis.
