Despite its impact being documented for decades, the role of prior language knowledge and experience—commonly referred to as crosslinguistic influence (CLI)—is a frequently overlooked aspect of second language learning. Previous texts have served to further our understanding of this phenomenon, most notably Jarvis and Pavlenko's (2008) Crosslinguistic Influence in Language and Cognition and Alonso's (2016) Crosslinguistic Influence in Second Language Acquisition.
