A phenomenologi-cal analysis of the wave propagation in a medium with elastic, viscous, and relaxational properties is presented. Studied in particular is the energy transfer to such a medium by computing the mechanical impedance of a harmonically oscillating spherical radiator. As an example, this impedance formula is numerically evaluated and plotted as a function of frequency for an elastic, viscous medium having the shear elasticity, shear viscosity, and compressibility of human muscle tissue. The impedance of the sphere in this medium will approx. describe the actual behavior of human muscle tissue in a frequency range in which the assumptions of isotropy, homogeneity (wavelength < structure of tissue), continuity (neglecting cavitation effects) and the constancy of the elastic"constants" (neglecting relaxa-tional effects) are fulfilled.
