Proposes a theory which accounts for both veridical and illusory perception of direction of rotation of rectangles and trapezoids, based on the same heuristic perceptual processing rules and the same sources of information. The change in angle between horizontal and vertical contours is held to be the principal indicator of direction of rotation, with the difference in acceleration of the vertical sides playing a secondary role. A process model is presented in which these sources are combined hierarchically. Predictions of the model match the quantitative results of 2 studies used in its development and the qualitative results of most other investigations. The role of heuristic processes in the model and the relationship of the model to other theories of perceived rotary motion are discussed.(30 ref.)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
