13reviews (ds) come under legal scrutiny and attack. Maines’s argument concerning the social camouflage it enjoyed goes far to explain how this could be so–it was simply not characterized as a sexual device. That camouflage long since stripped away, all that is now available to those who would protect female masturbatory pleasure from the intrusive and prurient prying of the State is a venerable medical tradition of arguing for the necessity of female orgasmic pleasure. We might wish that the right to pleasure could be cut free of talk of dysfunction and, especially, of family values and the preservation of the marital bond–that a ‘constitutional right to an orgasm’might someday be established. That day is clearly a long way off. In the meantime, we can always do as the mayor of Montgomery, Alabama advised–if a woman ‘wants a vibrator she ought to go and sit on a washing machine’. 3 Preferably, one assumes, while doing the family’s laundry. Talk about social camouflage!
