The conditions under which general acid catalysis should be observable in concentrated sulfuric acid are considered. An examination of the log activities or concentrations of the individual species present in thismedium, plotted against— H0, leads to theconclusion that HSOr rather than H20 should act as a nucleophile or base in some reactions, especially above 80% H2S04. As an example of general acid catalysis, the rearrangement of azoxybenzene to p-hydroxyazobenzene is shown to be catalyzed by the acid species H2S04 and H3S04+, but nor H30+, by log rate vs. log species activity correlations.
