MATERIALS AND METHODSFour groups of subjects (control subjects, right brain-damaged patients, non-aphasic left brain-damaged patients, and left brain-damaged patients with expressive aphasia but without clinically evident signs of comprehension defects) were given the Token Test, Marie's Three Paper Test and Raven's Progressive Matrices 1938. The last test was adopted in order to get an overall measure of general intellectual efficiency for each subject. The use of Raven's PM 1938 as a unitary measure of intelligence in focal brain-damaged subjects was justified by the results of a recent study by De Renzi and Faglioni (1965) which showed that the hemispheric locus of lesion does not appear to influence the performance on the test. The control subjects were patients who had been hospitalized in the neurologic clinic because of psychoneurosis or neural lesions below the cervical spinal level, or in the general medicine wards because of internal diseases. None showed evidence of cerebral disease. The side of lesion in the brain-damaged subjects was determined on the basis of clinical findings, usually supplemented by electroencephalographic and neuroradiological investigations. Patients who had obvious involvement of
