Sessile barnacles were collected from the intertidal rocks and pilings of the Laver Farm, Kadokto Island, near Pusan, Korea, which artificially cultures Porphyra species. The larvae of Balanus albicostatus Pilsbry were reared in the laboratory at a temperature of 25-degrees-C and salinity of 33 parts-per-thousand. Larval development includes six nauplius stages and a cyprid stage, following the typical pattern of the thoracican Cirripedia. All the nauplius stages have trilobed labrum, typical of balanoids, with numerous small teeth. Having numerical setation formulae for B. albicostatus makes it possible to compare this species with 11 species of the genus Balanus representing four groups (B. amphitrite, B. balanus, B. perforatus and B. trigonus) and illustrating the progressive increase in setal complexity and some divergence.
