About 160 FHA-containing proteins have been identified so far (see http://smart. embl-heidelberg. de). While the majority of these proteins appear to have nuclear functions, a few of them are localized in cellular compartments other than the nucleus. For example, the Arabidopsis kinase-associated protein phosphatase (KAPP) is a cytoplasmic protein that binds to the receptor-like protein kinase (Stone et al. 1994). One other cytoplasmic FHA-containing protein is the kinesin-like motor protein KIF1B, which colocalizes with mitochondria and can transport mitochondria along microtubules in vitro (Nangaku et al. 1994).
