The cerebral circulation is broadly limited by factors extrinsic to the brain, namely the general arterial blood pressure and the cardiac output. The cerebral blood flow will be maintained until the cardiac output is decreased by more than a third or the blood pressure is lowered to half or less of the normal value. Within these broad limits the cerebral blood flow is regulated by intrinsic factors, principally the cerebrovascular tone, which in turn is markedly influenced by chemical factors, chiefly the respiratory gases, and only slightly affected by neurogenic factors.
