The relationships between family history, blood pressure levels, and physiological responses to stress were studied. Children with and without hypertensive parents were ranked on resting systolic blood pressure levels and all groups were compared on blood pressure, heart rate and skin conductance during an unsignalled reaction time task and a word-game task. The results indicated that children at risk for the development of hypertension showed physiological responses to stress similar to those seen in adults with essential hypertension. Children were also tested for the coronaru-prone behavior pattern and no relationship was found between Type A classification and risk factors for hypertension.
