single sense has no correspondence with historical experience. Nevertheless, through the debate and discussion a sense of identity is preserved. In this volume Pere Congar Nestor of ecumenism and conciliar history sharply rejects the thoughtless notion that Vatican II marked a break with the past, but allows for a shift in self-understanding. At a time when the ecumenical movement is suffering from fear, inertia and impatience, and when agreed statements are suspect to one side merely because the other side can recognise its faith in them too, this volume will bring rays of light in a darkening situation.
