Several possible mechanisms could explain the gender “preference” of immune disorders for women. Among them are metabolic, genetic, cytokine, and apoptotic mechanisms, which might all be operable. This rapidly developing field has implications for all aspects of clinical human immunology, although much of the experimen-tal work is based on animal models.
