The contemporary belief in the power of this theory was perhaps most clearly shown in the acclaim given to Robert Koch's work on the role of the bacillus in tuberculosis, which was published in the same year as An Enemv ofJthe People. It is unlikely that a playwright would look to medicine for such inspiration today; our confidence in the ability of medical science to solve all ills has declined. Ibsen raised two important questions that remain with us: firstly how to distinguish medical areas from social and political areas and define the relation between them, and, secondly, if we cannot rely on absolute truths in either of these domains, how to assess the claims of the individual as opposed to the majority.
