Moreover, the opinions of the different authors who have written of the structure and relationship of Garrya have been curiously diverse. Few seed plants have had for so long such an unsettled taxonomie status. The plant has been allied by many botanists with the highest Archichlamydeae, by some with the primitive Dicotyledons, while various other taxonomists have assigned it to one or other intermediate position. This diversity of views is due in part to the contradictory nature of the various reports on the structure of Garrya-that is, to the still
