The aims of root canal preparation remain unchanged during the last few years, being still the removal of pulp tissue, debris and micro-organisms while creating a canal shape that facilitates accurate filling and, thereby, efficient sealing. These uncertainties that still exist suggest therefore that the aim of root filling should be to provide a perfect seal using biologically compatible materials thus confining the products of residual tissue autolysis and denying surviving micro-organisms either access to periapical tissue or continued nutrition by way of tissue fluid permeation.
