The Oregon Junco (Junco oreganus) and the Mexican Junco (Junco phaeonotus) were used. The birds were deafened by surgical extirpation of the cochlea at ages ranging from 47 to 90 days after hatching. Audiospectrographic analyses of the songs of deaf birds indicated that some aspects of song developed normally, while some other aspects were abnormal. The simple trill type song of the Oregon Junco developed in the deaf individuals of this species. The more complex form of song found in the wild Mexican Junco failed to develop in the deaf birds of this species. In both species deafening caused abnormalities in the component sounds of song. The songs of deaf female birds that were induced to sing by testosterone implantation were similar to those of the deaf males. The manner and frequency with which songs are delivered were not affected by deafness. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: M. Konishi
