Argues that the diagnosis and treatment of cancer carries a considerable risk of psychiatric morbidity (PM), particularly the development of anxiety state, depressive illness, or sexual problems. This morbidity may arise from the patients' inability to surmount important psychological hurdles. Hurdles encountered by cancer patients include uncertainty of survival, loss of support from family and friends, stigma of having the disease, and assumption of personal responsibility for the disease. Effects of treatment (eg, surgery, cytotoxic therapy, radiotherapy) are also sometimes responsible for the development of PM. Many instances of PM remain hidden and untreated. Inadequate training on the part of doctors and nurses and the reluctance of patients who develop PM to spontaneously disclose their problem to anyone involved in their care are among the reasons for low detection of PM. Possible solutions to this problem are discussed, including the use of specialist nurses and other intervention schemes.(25 ref)(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
