This paper examines the relationship between chronological maturation and patterns of self-referrals to drug abuse treatment. The data used in the study were from the 1978 Client Oriented Data Acquisition Process distributed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Data on over 222,000 persons admitted to 1800 drug treatment centers throughout the United States were available from this source. The results of this analysis suggested that an attempt at deaddiction was positevely related to the chronological maturation of the clients. These results were stable across race and sex. Some variations, however, were found depending on the primary type of substance for which the client was admitted to treatment.
