WhenBombyx morilarvae are dosed with δ-endotoxin, the level of K+in hemolymph begins to increase about 10 min after treatment. Neither K+, Na+, Ca2+, or Mg2+were accumulated in gut tissue during the first 10 min after toxin was given per os, nor was a change in the rate at which K+turns over in the gut tissue detected. Because glucose accumulation is known to be significantly stimulated within 1 min and maximally stimulated within 5 min after dosing (Fast and Donaghue, 1971) the data suggest that δ-endotoxin does not act as an ionophore.
