The plasma membrane ATPase has a central role in the coupling of metabolic energy to the work of driving solute transport at the surface of plant cells. While the mechanism of K+transport into plant cells is yet uncertain, it is clear that K+interacts specifically with the plasma membrane H-transporting ATPase. This K+interaction shows many similarities to what is observed in other membrane-associated ATpases which directly transport this cation. While reconstitution techniques may provide evidence for a direct role of the plasma membrane W-transporting ATPase in K+transport, the possibility that multiple modes of K+transport might exist in the native membrane should not be overlooked.
