In Chapter 1, we provided readers with the beginning of an outline of the key geographical concepts and concerns that might helpfully allow us to approach the study of language in creative and effective ways. The aim of this chapter is to develop some of these themes in more detail. As such, this chapter can be read in two distinct ways. First of all, it can be viewed as something of a freestanding account of the concepts and theories that might serve as a way of studying languages from a geographical perspective. In this context, the chapter seeks to set out a research agenda for the geographical study of language and, as such, it will be useful to all those academics who are interested in developing an understanding of the breadth of current geographical thinking and the way in which this can be applied to the study of languages. But, of course, the second key aim of this chapter is to provide a conceptual framework for the subsequent, more empirically-grounded, chapters in the book.
