Spectral transmission through the dorsal head cuticle of M. viciae was measured. Although all wavelengths between 370-800 nm are transmitted there is more absorption of the shorter wavelengths. These data are used to demonstrate that the photoperiodic receptor, which lies in the brain, is more sensitive to shorter wavelengths than indicated by whole animal action spectra.
