credit for not attempting to subordinate the Khmer text to it. His notes are for the most part informative and interesting. On the negative side, he seems here also overly disposed to follow the lead of his predecessors, while his treatment of the Khmer text suffers considerably from his failure to have made any use of the findings of linguistics over the past decade: too many of his comments on Old Khmer morphology and syntax are outdated and mistaken. It is disappointing to find him repeating and even developing (pp. xviii-xix) the ideas of Dupont and his forerunners to the effect that pre-Angkorian Khmer was "rigid" and unsystematic. Also, the author has exposed himself to charges of inconsistency by failing to give a clear statement of his policy governing his transliterations: the reader is entitled to know that the jagat ta in the first line of the Khmer text is jagat —ta, just as the first line of the Sanskrit has Namds — sivdy = dstu. The most vexing shortcoming of the volume, however, is owing to a major oversight on the publisher's part, namely, the poor quality of the five plates. In the first of these, a photograph of one of the two fragments of the stele that survived the 1958 fire mentioned above, the text is virtually illegible. The other four are photographs of estampages of the stele's four faces; these entail a reduction to one-third of the original, while the estampages themselves appear to be of the old-fashioned Lottin de Laval type, notoriously difficult to reproduce. These too, therefore, are of little if any use to the reader. The state of these plates is all the more regrettable in that, aside from part of face C published by Aymonier, facsimiles of the inscription are unavailable to readers without access to the Paris estampages.
