Couples expecting their first child completed the LockeWallace Marital Adjustment Scale and the Bem Sex Role Inventory during the last trimester of the wife's pregnancy, and again after the birth of the baby. In partial replication of previous research, it was found that wives' marital adjustment scores were significantly lower following the birth. Item analysis showed that the wives' overall ratings of happiness and their relative dominance in disagreements were important items in accounting for the decrease. No relationship was found between parental sex role characteristics and decrease in marital satisfaction.
