Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), the 27-amino acid mammalian homologue of the 14-amino acid amphibian peptide. bombesin, was the first peptide hormone localized to pulmonary neuroendocrine cells (PNECs), and is present at especially high levels in human fetal lung (1). Because of this, speculation began that GRP (mammalian bombesin) might play a role in normal lung development. Neither GRP nor any of the hormones synthesized and secreted by resident PNECs (2) have been demonstrated to have a role in normal lung growth or differentiation (which together comprise lung" development"). Both GRP and bombesin include a highly conserved 10-amino acid carboxy-terminal portion that is required for recognition by antibodies as well as for binding
