It might therefore be wondered why further definitions of the same terms should be needed. The Nautical Institute working party has concentrated on terms where it was felt there was still some ambiguity at sea, and perhaps even more in the classroom. In general, the new terms conform to, or occasionally amplify, those given in BS 4883. In the case of course, track and heading (a perennially difficult trio), however, the working party found it necessary to differentiate between a vector and heading (which does not necessarily imply movement); vectors are described as tracks. The figure illustrates the principles followed. This yields terms occasionally at variance with the British Standard. Whether any modification of BS 4883 (which also relates to air navigation) is called for is under review by the Institute.
