During recent studies on regeneration of nerve fibers (Weiss and Taylor, 1944), it was noted that in a nerve transected and divided so that one-half of the fibers was bloc ke d and not allowed to make terminal connec tions, while the other half was per-mitted to regenerate unimpeded, the nerve fibers in the unconnec ted branch did not attain a size comparable to the regenerated, connec ted fibers. Permanently disconnected nerves were further studied by Sanders and Young (1945, 1946), Weiss, Edds and Cavanaugh (1945) and Aitken, Sharman and Young (1947) in adult rabbits and rats, and it was found that the size which a nerve fiber could attain, while somewhat limited by the diameter of the tube into which it was allowed to regenerate (Sanders and Young, l944; Hammond and Hinsey, 1945; Simpson and Young, 1945) was for the most part de termined by whether or not a connection was effected with an end organ. Therefore it was sugge sted that if a nerve fiber were unable to reach and make a functional connec-tion with muscle, skin, etc, it was lacking in a condition nec essary to permit return to its former state, During the last part of the nine teenth and beginning of the twentieth century, investigators concerned with cases of limb amputation or with various types of nerve section (ie, simple section, evulsion, section at varying distances from the cells of origin and resec tion of various amounts of nerve) frequently l
