Somatodendritic transmitter release refers to the release of a neuroactive substance from the cell body (soma) and dendrites of a neuron. Initial reports of somatodendritic release were pioneering (1, 2) and the results unexpected given that transmitter release is a well-recognized function of axons. Indeed, the conventional textbook image of a neuron shows a cell body and dendrites that receive synaptic input on one end and a long axon with a vesicle-containing terminals and diffusing clouds of released transmitter on the other end (Figure 1A). Somatodendritic transmitter release (Figure 1B) is rarely mentioned in this context. Consequently, the concept can still evoke surprise, even among established neuroscientists.
