Research on the characterization of lithic heat treatment in prehistory became a major topic in lithic technology studies following the pioneering work of Donald Crabtree in the 1960s. In the last three decades, the literature on this topic has become relatively abundant (Crabtree and Butler 1964; Mandeville 1973; Collins and Fenwick 1974; Purdy 1974; Bleed and Meier 1980; Domanski and Webb 1992; Brooks and Doming 1997; Pavlish 2002). Numerous analyses have 1) tested and improved the methods, analytical tools, and criteria of observation essential for providing greater diagnostic effectiveness for heated rocks; and 2) enhanced our understanding of the physical (structural, mechanical, etc.) and techno-economic (time, temperature, skills, etc.) aspects involved in the process of heating tools tones.
