Taken together, the studies inform us about how media activism flourishes, how it becomes constrained, and how activists find newways to ensure voice and participation. Spanning various time frames and cultural contexts, the breadth of issues presented in this edited volume provides readers with a thorough overview of the range of media activism. As such, Pickard and Yang have assembled a much-needed addition to the existing body of literature, while joining well with other recent projects on and about media activism (see, e.g., Carragee & Frey, 2016; Johnson, 2017; Kaun, 2016; Mattoni, 2017; Meikle, 2018; Trottier & Fuchs, 2014; Uldam, 2018). Often, media activism becomes conceptualized as an “emerging” field of research; however, Pickard and Yang’s collection illustrates that the subfield boasts an active and sustained research program across communication, media, and information studies. The edited volume thus provides scholars and students alike with an insightful overview of the issues we are facing right now—surveillance, capitalism, access, diversity, etc. Beyond the uses in activist research, Media activism in the digital age would also be suitable for the advanced undergraduate and graduate classroom. Courses with learning frameworks such as critical media studies, feminist media studies, ICT policy, or digital methods would greatly benefit from including (excerpts of) this collection as a reading requirement.
