Previous studies of nonhuman primate cognitive development indicate that object permanence can be observed in infant monkeys by 9 months of age. Although the infant monkey provides unique parallels to the human infant in object permanence development, only one report has investigated factors that may influence this development in the nonhuman primate. This report describes the development of object permanence in infant Macaca fascicularis (crab eating Macaques) and provides evidence that exposure to a prevalent environmental pollutant, methylmercury, can retard object permanence development.
