Although various records of the oldest geographic data precede the Three Kingdoms period (second century BC) in Korea, major materials which treated geography as a separate discipline and related humans to their physical environment were not written until the eleventh century. Since then a number of geographic materials, mainly regional studies and maps, have been published. At the end of the nineteenth century, geography as a modern discipline was introduced to elementary and secondary education in Korea. Geography, especially the oldfashioned regional geography, was taught in most schools until 1945. At the college level geography as a subject of scholarly inquiry was developed within other departments, especially history and geology, in the Kyongsung Imperial University which was under Japanese administration. The first geography department was founded in the College of Education, Seoul National University in 1946. One year later Kyongbuk National University created a department of geography in the College of Education. Graduates of these universities have naturally played an important role in the development of geography in Korea over the years.There are currently 24 independent departments of geography and three geography departments combined with other social sciences at 24 universities in the country. In addition, geography is taught as a major subject in 11 teachers’ colleges. Only one university, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, offers a geography course as part of a liberal education even though there is no geography department. While most of the graduates from departments in colleges of education enter the secondary school system as geography teachers, other geographers who were trained in colleges of social science are working in various professional fields including research institutes, government agencies and private companies. A master’s degree in geography can be obtained from the graduate schools of 14 universities including 10 MA and 6 M. Ed. programs. The master’s program began at Seoul National University and Kyongbuk National University in 1951 and Kyunghee University in 1958. The remaining universities began their programs during or after the 1960s. Eight universities offer doctoral programs: Seoul National University, Dongguk University, Kyunghee University, Konkuk University, Ewha Woman’s University, Sungshin Woman’s University, Kyongbuk National University, and Chunnam National University. More than one dozen persons have already obtained a Ph. D. in geography from these universities and more than 60 students are registered.
