The radiosensitivity of Ehrlich mouse ascites tumor cells to X-rays in vitro is about 3 times greater in a well oxygenated than in an anoxic medium. Sensitivity to fast neutrons is only slightly dependent on O2 pressure. The solid tumor, in vivo, showed greater regression when exposed to X-rays while the mice were inhaling pure O2 than when they were inhaling air. Cell degeneration in chick fibroblasts exposed to X-rays increases with increasing O2 pressure. Oxidation of Fe++, irradiated as Fe(NH4)2(SO4)2 in 0.8 [image]sulfuric acid, shows the same dependence on O2 concn. as biological reactions. Production of H2O2 however, does not show such a parallel dependence on O2 concn.
